Maarakool Art

Mel Spillman (Woods) and her brother Ben are Noongar Artists based in Western Australia. Mel founded Maarakool Art, through her passion of telling stories through art and keeping her heritage and culture alive. Together they create unique works inspired by their deep connection to country.

Mel Spillman is a Noongar artist who was born in Queensland and is currently based in Western Australia. Through a variety of applications, Mel uses paint as a tool to tell stories and share knowledge. Raised away from her Aboriginal heritage, she wasn't connected to her culture. Through the practice of artmaking, she seeks to rebuild that connection, with a self-taught practice that extends from acrylics on canvas to leather and enamel paints as well as large-scale mural-based works.
